Stredisko Zamaguria. Založená v roku 1308. Ležala na dôležitej obchodnej ceste do Poľska. Bola obľúbenou zastávkou remeselníkov a kupcov. V roku 1337 pripadla obec kartuziánskym mníchom z Lechnice. V roku 1399 udelil kráľ Žigmund Spišskej Starej Vsi mestské výsady. V 16. storočí kartuziánskych mníchov na Červenom Kláštore vystriedali svetskí majitelia, ktorí Spišskú Starú Ves obrali o niekdajšie výsady a nastal úpadok mesta.
Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie pochádza z druhej polovice 14. storočia. Pri požiari v roku 1760 takmer celý zhorel. Hlavný oltár je neskorobarokový z roku 1765.
It
is the centre of the Zamagurie country. It was founded in 1308. It is situated
on the former very important business route which led into Poland. It was a
favourite stopping place of craftsmen and merchants. In 1337 the village devolved
to Cartesian monks from Lechnica. In 1339 Spišská Stará Ves obtained town privileges
granted from King Žigmund. In the 16th Century profane owners began to reign
instead of Cartesian monks from Červený kláštor and of the town declined.
The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary comes from the second half of the 14th Century. It was almost entirely burnt down in a conflagration in 1760. The altar is constructed in late Baroque style and comes from 1765.
